A while back we reviewed the Stara San Angel hotel located in a little served neighborhood away from the main corridor, but sister hotel Stara Hamburgo is right in the thick of things.
Named after the street it is located on, this stylish 60-room property is just off Paseo de la Reforma, near many financial headquarters and the Zona Rosa. It’s a short cab ride (or long walk) to the historic center in one direction, or Chapultapec Park and Polanco in the other. It’s also not far from the hot residential and dining neighborhoods of Condesa and Roma.
This is not a staid business hotel with predictable style and furnishings. You see contemporary art pieces in every direction in the lobby and this continues in the minimalist, tastefully decorated mini-suites with a partial wall separating the sleeping and lounging areas. Those on the bottom floor have a courtyard patio. Nice touches include L’Occitane bath products and electronic do not disturb signs that lock the door. Good soundproofing keeps the city noise at bay.
There’s no swimming pool here—hotels that have one at this altitude need to keep it heated much of the year. There are plenty of places to lounge around, however, including a roof deck with a view.
“Each floor has common spaces where guests can sit and talk outside their rooms and each is a little bit different. The executive floor has a large, conference-style wooden table and library for business meetings. The top floor has another working library off of their rooftop dining area. There are several open-air patios for both eating and drinking on the top floor and a few chaise lounges for guests to take in a little sun.”
Despite this not being a very large hotel, there are three places to dine. Luna Bistrot is the main draw with its quasi-Italian fare and “the stripped-down industrial-antique dining room has great ambiance.”
This is an area packed with hotels, from the elegant Four Seasons to the snazzy St. Regis, plus there are dozens of chain hotels the size of the Stara on up serving business travelers not on a blowout budget. This is a nice bridge between the two, feeling like a luxury boutique hotel in the vein of Las Alcobas in Polanco, but with rates running $220 to $400 including breakfast.
