Hot on the heels of Delta’s new summer 2019 service between Boston (BOS) and Lisbon (LIS) comes yet another transatlantic route to celebrate. Scheduled to begin on May 23, 2019, and operate through Delta’s typical summer schedule is a new connection between Boston and Edinburgh, Scotland (EDI), marking the carrier’s eighth transatlantic destination out of Beantown.
The service complements Delta’s existing service between Boston and the United Kingdom, which includes flights to London-Heathrow, offered both on Delta and joint venture partner Virgin Atlantic, as well as Virgin Atlantic’s service to Manchester. Prior to Boston, Delta’s only other US to Edinburgh route originated out of New York (JFK).
Oddly enough, the announcement comes just days after Norwegian decided to cease its transatlantic operations to and from Edinburgh (EDI), as well as its Newburgh (SWF) to Belfast (BFS) service.
The BOS-EDI route will operate on the following schedule effective May 23, 2019:
- Boston Logan International Airport (BOS) 10:15pm Departure ⇒ Edinburgh Airport (EDI) 9:25am (+1) Arrival
- Edinburgh Airport (EDI) 10:55am Departure ⇒ Boston Logan International Airport (BOS) 1:02pm Arrival
The on board Delta experience will be on Boeing 757 aircraft equipped with 16 seats in Delta One (business class), 44 seats Delta Comfort+ and 108 seats in Main Cabin. Every seat includes access to Wi-Fi, free personal inflight seatback entertainment screens and power ports as well as complimentary beverages, snacks and meals. Charlie Schewe, director of New England sales, had this to say: “This is an incredibly exciting time for Delta in Boston as we grow our network, build on our customer experience enhancements, and deepen our community footprint. Our new Edinburgh service is only the latest way we’re growing Boston’s direct access to international destinations around the world.”
It’s important to note that unlike Delta’s Boston-Lisbon route, which relies on a Boeing 757 with recliner-style domestic first class seats that are sold as Premium Select, the airline’s Boston-Edinburgh route will use an internationally configured 757 with proper Delta One lie-flats. Granted, the 2-2 configuration may not please solo business travelers, but couples jetting off for a much-deserved holiday will likely adore the arrangement.
In related news, Delta’s Dublin service, which debuted in 2017, will operate on larger Boeing 767-300ER aircraft in 2019 “due to increased demand.” In case it wasn’t abundantly clear, Delta’s taking this whole “focus city” thing pretty seriously, which is great news for those situated in the Bay State.
If you’re planning to book a seat for next summer, make sure you use the right credit card. We’ve assembled a guide covering the best cards for Delta loyalists, and the Delta Reserve® for Business Credit Card from American Express, which includes gratis Delta Sky Club lounge access, is offering an elevated welcome bonus of 70,000 miles after you spend $5,000 within the first three months (offer expires Nov. 7, 2018).
