Kenya Wildlife Services (KWS) has re-introduced the Safaricard system to Kenya’s national parks.
The Safaricard was rolled out in 2010 and suspended in December 2017. From May 8, visitors will be able to use their card for entry once again at Amboseli, Lake Nakuru, Tsavo East, Tsavo West, Nairobi and Aberdare National Parks. From June 1, the system will be rolled out officially and all visitors will be required to use a Safaricard for payment of the entry fees at these parks. Visitors who do not yet have Safaricards will be issued at the gate with temporary cards, which must be returned on exiting. In addition to the six parks, sales points will be active at Malindi Marine National Park and Reserve and Diani/Chale Marine National Park and Reserve from June 1.
Payment can be loaded on to the card through MPESA (mobile based money transfer), direct bank deposit, electronic funds transfer or card payments. Cash is not accepted at any KWS park gate or office.
Tour operators may still make bulk payments or advance payments through the KWS bank accounts. Their payment will be loaded on to their Safaricard when proof of payment is presented at a point of sale during working hours. However, operators are advised to make payment one day in advance to allow adequate time for the funds to reflect on the KWS bank statement. Operators must specify the park they are paying for on the deposit reference.
Tour operators who still have prepaid park tickets may continue to use them after the Safaricard roll-out, however these tickets will only be valid until December 31. No new prepaid tickets will be issued after June 1.
