Memphis Airport will close most of Terminal B on April 4 to make way for a modernization project that could cost $100 million.
As a result, Delta will operate out of six gates in Terminal A, and Allegiant will move to Terminal C.
The Memphis-Shelby County Airport Authority is reinventing airport in the aftermath of Delta’s shuttering of its Memphis hub operation in 2010. After Delta’s move, there was an approximate 65% drop in Memphis’ air passenger traffic over the next four years.
Though numbers have since rebounded with the entry of Southwest, Frontier and Allegiant into the market, most of Memphis Airport’s 83 gates sit vacant.
Construction at Terminal B is expected to begin in July and last until 2021. When it reopens, passengers will enjoy moving walkways, higher ceilings and larger gate areas. They’ll also find a more concentrated facility, where gates, retail outlets and restaurants will be more conveniently situated, reflecting the airport’s smaller operation.
After the renovation, Memphis plans to mothball terminals A and C.
For now, international flights will continue to arrive at gates B41, B42 and B43, and passengers will still make use of the Terminal B customs office. They will then be bused to the baggage claim area.
