But facts and figures aside, why else is working in the travel and tourism industry so great?
There are a vast amount of professions you can go into within the sector, such as transport, conventions, arts and culture, hotels, food and beverage, eco-tourism (it is set to be big), and other additional services related to tourism.
Working within the fast-paced industry means you will be exposed to cultures, learn about communities different to your own and be able to explore corners of the world out of reach to many people.
Within the travel and tourism industry, there are also plenty of ethics to get your head around. If you are interested in academia and research, you can come to understand how this industry affects whole economies and individuals.
These ethics also extend to how you can make a difference to a community, and perhaps even to the tourism industry.
You can share your passions with people and teach them how to create a sustainable tourism industry, one that leaves only the type of footprint that will be washed away by the ocean.
The travel and tourism industry also teaches you a lot about yourself.
Opposed to being stuck behind a desk conforming to the daily grind, this sector will challenge you from time to time, but you will discover just how versatile, creative and ingenious you are when tackling these issues.
Ultimately only you can decide. If you’re a home bird then explore the options of working in a local hotel or resort.
Perhaps find out how to get involved in culinary arts. This way you can transfer the skills you learn if you decide a life on the road is for you at a later time.
Alternatively, apply for anything and everything that makes you excited – because it is the things in life you don’t do which you end up regretting.
And remember, always choose the path in life that gives you the better story.
