Grand Rapids Community College.
As if that wasn’t awesome enough, the college is opening Fountain Hill Brewery and Peter’s Pub.
This is a huge first, because it makes it the first college in the US to be federally and state-licensed to own and operate a brewery and pub that generates revenue.
The pub can host about 50 people. The brewery has a three-barrel Craftwerks system designed to brew approximately six kegs per batch. On tap will be a pale ale, both a CO2 and Nitro Scottish ale, Hefeweizen, an American IPA, a lagered Baltic Porter and a blonde ale, all brewed by students.
Bill Pink, vice president and dean of workforce development at the college, says, “When you look at Grand Rapids as Beer City, it makes sense for us as a community college to do all we can to train the industry.”
While other brewing programs have pubs or breweries on campus, what differentiates GRCC is the college has control over the entire operation, as opposed to pairing up with a local craft brewer or supplier.
Says Pink. “We do it ourselves so we can provide a lab for our students. After that, we’ll provide a work force. It’s pretty cool to be trendsetters like that.”
