After the North American Leaders’ Summit in Ottawa, Canada has agreed to lift its controversial visa requirement for Mexican visitors. The visa restrictions will be lifted by the end of this year.
Before Trudeau was elected, Canada had imposed the visa restrictions in 2009 in an effort to stop the numerous asylum claims being made by Mexican citizens. But with the asylum rate in Canada for Mexicans dropping below 1% in the last four years (down from 25% in 2008), many argued it was finally time to end the visa restrictions.
