Last year, Singapore Airlines launched a premium economy product on several of its long-haul aircraft, including the Airbus A380 and Boeing 777-300ER. We were generally impressed with the new seat and cabin, though it might not make sense to pay a significant premium over economy, depending on the route.
Here’s how Singapore describes mySQupgrade:
mySQupgrade will initially allow invited customers booked to travel in Economy Class, the opportunity to make a bid for a seat in Premium Economy Class. This functionality will be gradually introduced across the network, and provide customers another option to upgrade their class of travel, and enjoy greater levels of comfort when they fly.
So based on the above, it sounds like you need to receive an “invitation” to bid, and while this process is limited to premium economy at launch, it may roll out to other cabins in the future.
You won’t be able to bid whatever you like — say, $1 for a long-haul leg — but you can expect to save a bit over the regular fares, especially if you were able to score a great deal on your coach ticket. After you receive an invitation, you’ll be able to select from a pre-determined range, which you can probably expect to be a bit higher on longer trips. You bid for each segment, though it’s not clear how “direct” flights will be handled, such as SQ’s one-stop service from Singapore to Frankfurt to New York-JFK.
Singapore Airlines posted a fairly comprehensive FAQ guide, but there are still a few unknowns, such as sample bid ranges for different flights. If you receive an offer to place a bid, please share the range and whether or not you were successful in the comments below!
